The Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) was founded in 1886 and today is one of the preeminent institutions of Jewish higher education in the world. As a member of the Yerusha network, JTS surveyed archives, libraries and museums in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus with additional support from the Claims Conference. The work has opened up new vistas for the study of modern Jewish history by exploring and describing the archival heritage of the largest centre of Jewish life in the 19th and early 20th centuries, whose culture and communities were destroyed by the double blows of Nazism and Communism .
